Build to Zero Overview   EDF has started an initiative to intensify the speed and scale of clean energy and clean transportation project deployment – called “Build to Zero” -- that will activate its deep bench of political, policy, legal, communications and private-sector expertise to overcome the most significant barriers. The Build to Zero workstream pushes for ambitious action through every possible lever – including executive actions and federal, state, and local legislation and/or policy change – while holding fast to EDF’s core values and its commitment to equity and community engagement.   Overall Function   The Project Manager, Build to Zero will support the execution of the Built to Zero strategy through robust project management and operational support, ensuring that the strategy helps achieve the greatest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Addressing barriers, like permitting and siting hurdles, that stall individual clean energy projects and delay construction of clean infrastructure is of critical importance. This position will work across the organization to help drive results in key regions and mission areas, and they will help develop a robust, collaborative external network to leverage EDF’s investment in this work.   Reporting to the Vice President, Build to Zero, the Project Manager demonstrates a strong spirit of collaboration, communicates with trust and transparency, and has a laser focus on achieving results while supporting this new initiative. Additionally, they will collaborate with colleagues across EDF and with external allies to strengthen, hone, and pursue EDF’s strategy and leadership on clean energy infrastructure buildout in the United States.   Location: There is a preference for candidates based in Washington DC, but other candidates located throughout the U.S. will be considered.   Duration: This is a two year fixed-term contract position with the opportunity for extension. MethaneSAT, LLC, an affiliate of Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is launching a new, high performance, purpose-built satellite—MethaneSAT—to map and measure oil and gas methane emissions worldwide, with the potential to assess emissions from the full range of man-made sources. The satellite will enable us to gather methane emissions data on a global scale and with data from other sources, locate and quantify these emissions. Data from MethaneSAT will help EDF reduce methane emissions by 45% by 2025 and holds the potential to help reduce the temperature of our planet by as much 0.5 degrees C by the end of the century. This could be the most impactful environmental project yet conceived.   Overall Function    The Mission Planning Engineer will work with our stakeholders, scientists, engineers, and partners to support the successful operation of the MethaneSAT spacecraft to enable delivery of scientifically accurate and impactful data products to a global audience. The MethaneSAT Mission Operations are comprised of satellite command and control, health and safety monitoring, mission planning, and communications to operate the spacecraft in orbit. It will use cloud-based services to provide the computing, data archiving and operational interfaces between these functions. On-orbit commissioning operations are the responsibility of the flight systems integration contractor. Post commissioning operations will be transitioned to a New Zealand-based Mission Operations Center and team responsible for long-term MethaneSAT Mission Operations. The Mission Planning Engineer will own the day-to-day mission planning system and processes for MethaneSAT, incorporating stakeholder needs, engineering assessments and analysis of system performance to ensure the effective target collection by the mission. Improved understanding of mechanisms, measurement, and baselines will enable implementation of the most effective and credible climate solutions while also benefitting agricultural resilience, soil health and farmer livelihoods. We work to advance the scientific understanding of agricultural systems, and to translate the science into action through implementation of the most effective and credible climate solutions.   Overall Function   The Fellow will be closely engaged with the work of Cornell’s School of Integrative Plant Sciences’ Soil & Crop Sciences Section, will participate in the joint EDF-Cornell Sustainability Leadership Program, join a thriving community of scientists across EDF, and participate in ongoing meetings with program and policy staff across the organization. The Fellow will be part of a collaborative team that spans multiple universities (Yale School of the Environment, Cornell School of Integrative Plant Science) and organizations (Hudson Carbon and Woodwell Climate Research Center), and will report directly to the co-P.I.’s (Drs. Emily Oldfield and Jocelyn Lavallee at EDF and Dr. Louis Longchamps at Cornell). This collaborative team is implementing a research project focusing on regional and field scale sampling designs for soil carbon sequestration in the Hudson Valley of New York State. The Fellow will couple high density soil carbon stock data with other data products related to soil series, topography, management, landscape and environmental covariates (e.g., soil survey data, remote sensing data products) to explore questions related to soil sampling designs, landscape stratification and data optimization for digital soil mapping in a regional agroecosystem. We anticipate the Fellow will lead the writing of at least one peer-reviewed publication, a white paper, one publication and one presentation for Extension, and will help curate an open-access database.   Key Responsibilities   Working with the co-P.I.’s, the Fellow will help refine and direct the scope of the study and assume leadership of the work in close collaboration with the larger project team. Eligibility to work in the U.S. is required for the duration of the fellowship.   Term    This is a 2-year fellowship with an anticipated start date between July 1 and September 1, 2024.    Overall Function    The Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellow will develop a model to evaluate the food and nutrition provisioning implications of prospective commercial fisheries targeting mesopelagic (midwater) marine fishes and zooplankton for use in aquaculture feeds (e.g., fishmeal), and conduct a trade-off analysis of climate mitigation and food production goals from such fisheries. Specifically, the fellow will calculate the fishmeal production potential from fisheries in 1-2 geographies (potentially the California Current, Humboldt Current, and/or the North Atlantic), and calculate the potential protein and micronutrient yield of aquaculture species portfolios reflecting different management goals (e.g., maximize protein, maximize specific nutrients, maximize profit). This analysis would be integrated with ongoing modeling of the carbon sequestration potential of mesopelagic species, to enable a trade-off analysis. The fellow will determine the optimum level of harvest of mesopelagic species in each geography that could support food security provisioning and minimize disruption of carbon sequestration. This model and trade-off analysis will be developed into one or more academic journal articles, as well as policy briefs and communication materials to share with national and international fishery management bodies, industry representatives, and climate leaders.    The fellow will work with Dr. Julia Mason, Social-ecological Systems Scientist and Dr. Mattias Cape, Marine Biogeochemical Scientist at EDF, and Dr. Eugene Won, a fish biologist and aquaculture specialist at Cornell University. The fellow will be part of a cohort of postdoctoral and research fellows at EDF, and will collaborate closely with research partners at Cornell University as well as other research institutions. Minimizing methane emissions from oil and natural gas supply chains is a core part of EDF’s energy and climate work. Qualifications - A PhD in atmospheric science, physical sciences or engineering (e.g., chemical engineering) or related field with at least 2 years of experience, post-doc required. - A track record of performing and publishing methane-focused research. - Familiarity with methane emission datasets (i.e., in-situ measurements, satellite remote sensing). - Experience coordinating methane field measurement campaigns. - Understanding of methane monitoring technologies. - Strong quantitative analysis skills. - Excellent written and oral communication skills.  - Initiates and maintains contacts within the scientific community. - Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work. - The ability to communicate complex ideas in writing and orally to multiple stakeholders with different levels of expertise, including the public and industry. - Must demonstrate cultural awareness and the knowledge, attitude, behavior and skills that lead to a culturally competent workplace. Must demonstrate a commitment to continued self-assessment, learning and growth to increase and broaden culturally competent skillsets that produce effective interactions with people across diverse cultures and backgrounds. This includes the ability to adapt to cultural change. - An ability to work both independently and as a member of small teams on multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic. and creative environment. - Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
